Metal pans and cookware don't last forever. Instead of tossing out old pizza pans, cookie sheets and other pans, transform them into a magnetic message board for your kitchen or office. You can even create a personalized magnetic chalkboard for a kid's room to practice the alphabet, math or for them to simply doodle.
What you need:
- metal cooking pan (can be a cookie sheet, pizza pan or round pan of any size)
- chalkboard paint
- acrylic craft paint
- newspaper or drop cloth (to protect work area)
- hanging hooks
Before you begin painting your pan, clean it thoroughly. Depending on the type of pan you're using and if there is caked on food residue. You can clean the pan in any of the following ways:
- traditionally with soap, water and a sponge
- spraying an all-purpose cleaner or glass cleaner on the pan and wipe down with a rag or paper towel
Don't worry about removing every stain from the pan. Just make sure there are no uneven, textured sections that could potentially show through the paint or make it hard to write on the chalkboard.
If you're having a hard time removing a lot of the food residue, try using a wire brush or sponge. You can find these at just about any discount store in the cleaning aisle. It may also help to use a grease fighting dish soap and let the pan soak for a few hours before attempting to scrub off the residue. Try to stay away from any sticky residue removers, such as Goo Gone, since they usually leave a greasy layer, which may prevent the paint from sticking to the pan.
